Short answer

Trading styles are often distinguished by how long a position is typically held, which in turn shapes the tools, time commitment, and risk exposure involved. Day trading generally requires close, active attention during market hours and can involve more frequent, smaller decisions, while avoiding the risk of adverse moves happening overnight when a trader is not watching.

Trading styles are often distinguished by how long a position is typically held, which in turn shapes the tools, time commitment, and risk exposure involved.

The Three Broad Styles

  • Day trading — positions are opened and closed within the same trading day, avoiding overnight exposure
  • Swing trading — positions are held for several days to a few weeks, aiming to capture a larger portion of a price swing
  • Position trading — positions are held for weeks to months, based on longer-term fundamental or technical views

Tradeoffs Between Styles

Day trading generally requires close, active attention during market hours and can involve more frequent, smaller decisions, while avoiding the risk of adverse moves happening overnight when a trader is not watching. Swing and position trading require less constant screen time but expose open positions to overnight and weekend price gaps, where price can move significantly before a trader has a chance to react.
