Short answer

Loss aversion describes a well-documented pattern in human decision-making: the pain of losing a given amount feels stronger than the pleasure of gaining the same amount. In trading, this asymmetry shapes decisions in ways that often work against good risk management.

Loss aversion describes a well-documented pattern in human decision-making: the pain of losing a given amount feels stronger than the pleasure of gaining the same amount. In trading, this asymmetry shapes decisions in ways that often work against good risk management.

Common Effects

  • Holding losing positions too long, hoping to avoid "locking in" a loss
  • Closing winning trades too early to secure a smaller, certain gain
  • Avoiding valid setups after a recent loss, even when the new setup is unrelated

Notice the pattern: losses get held longer than they should, and gains get cut shorter than they should. Over many trades, this combination can quietly erode an otherwise sound strategy, even if the trader is right more often than wrong.
