Short answer

A stock's price and a company's underlying value are related but not identical concepts. Price is simply what the market is currently willing to pay per share; value is an estimate of what the business is actually worth based on its assets, earnings, and future prospects.

A stock's price and a company's underlying value are related but not identical concepts. Price is simply what the market is currently willing to pay per share; value is an estimate of what the business is actually worth based on its assets, earnings, and future prospects.

Prices move constantly based on supply and demand, news, and investor sentiment, and can drift away from a reasonable estimate of underlying value for extended periods in either direction.

Why the Gap Matters

  • A stock can be "overvalued," trading above what its fundamentals might justify, often driven by optimism or hype.
  • A stock can be "undervalued," trading below its fundamentals, sometimes due to negative sentiment or being overlooked.
  • Estimating value involves judgment and assumptions about the future, so different analysts can reasonably disagree.
