A stock exchange is an organized marketplace where buyers and sellers meet to trade shares of publicly listed companies. Exchanges provide the rules, technology, and oversight that make it possible for many trades to happen efficiently every day.

Rather than negotiating trades individually, investors place orders through brokers, and the exchange's matching system pairs buy orders with sell orders at agreed prices. This continuous matching process is what determines a stock's current market price.

Key Roles an Exchange Plays

  • Price discovery: constant buying and selling reveals what the market currently believes a share is worth.
  • Liquidity: a well-functioning exchange makes it easier to buy or sell shares quickly without drastically moving the price.
  • Regulation and transparency: listed companies must meet disclosure requirements, giving investors access to financial information.
