Break of structure (BOS) and change of character (CHoCH) are two ways price action confirms what the underlying trend is doing, and mixing them up leads to reading structure backwards. A BOS happens when price pushes beyond a prior swing high or low in the direction of the existing trend.

Break Of Structure

A BOS happens when price pushes beyond a prior swing high or low in the direction of the existing trend. In an uptrend, a new higher high confirms buyers are still in control; in a downtrend, a new lower low confirms sellers remain dominant. A BOS is a continuation signal, not a reversal one.

Change Of Character

A CHoCH is the first structural clue that the prevailing trend may be ending. It occurs when price breaks a swing point against the current trend for the first time — for example, an uptrend failing to make a new higher high and then breaking below the most recent higher low. This does not guarantee a full reversal; it simply flags that momentum has shifted enough to warrant caution.

Because structure can look different depending on the timeframe examined, many traders confirm a CHoCH on a higher timeframe before treating it as meaningful, and always combine it with other analysis rather than acting on structure alone.
