Understanding Stop-Limit Orders
A 1-minute lesson from the MarketPro academy, one of 16 in orders and execution.
A stop-limit order combines two order types into one instruction: a stop price that triggers the order, and a limit price that caps or floors the price at which it can actually execute. A regular stop order becomes a market order once triggered, meaning it will execute at whatever price is available, even if that price has moved significantly.

How It Differs From a Standard Stop Order
A regular stop order becomes a market order once triggered, meaning it will execute at whatever price is available, even if that price has moved significantly. A stop-limit order instead becomes a limit order once triggered, meaning it will only execute at the specified limit price or better.
- This gives more control over the execution price compared to a standard stop order.
- The tradeoff is that if the price moves quickly past the limit price without trading at that level, the order may not execute at all, leaving the position open.
- This can be especially relevant during fast-moving news events or gaps, when prices can skip past a specific limit level entirely.
