Short answer

Slippage refers to the difference between the price a trader expects to receive on an order and the price at which the order actually executes. It is a normal part of trading, particularly for market orders and triggered stop orders.

Slippage refers to the difference between the price a trader expects to receive on an order and the price at which the order actually executes. It is a normal part of trading, particularly for market orders and triggered stop orders.

Why Slippage Happens

  • Prices can move between the moment an order is placed and the moment it actually reaches the market.
  • In fast-moving or low-liquidity conditions, there may not be enough volume available at the expected price to fill the entire order.
  • Significant news events or market gaps, such as a price jumping between one session's close and the next session's open, can cause especially large slippage.
