Short answer

Divergence occurs when price and a momentum indicator disagree about the strength of a move — for example, price makes a new high while the indicator makes a lower high — and is one of the more widely used concepts across momentum-based indicators. Regular divergence is often watched as a possible early warning of a reversal: price makes a new extreme, but the underlying momentum indicator fails to confirm it, suggesting the move may be losing strength.

Hidden divergence works in the opposite direction and is generally read as a continuation signal: price makes a shallower pullback while the indicator makes a deeper one, suggesting the broader trend still has underlying support.

Divergence can appear on RSI, MACD, stochastic, CCI, or almost any oscillator, since the underlying concept is comparing price extremes to indicator extremes
Divergence can persist for an extended period before price actually reverses, so treating it as an immediate trigger rather than an early warning can lead to premature entries
Divergence is easier to spot in hindsight on a chart than to trade confidently in real time, since the final swing point is only confirmed after the fact

Because of this lag between when divergence becomes visible and when it can be acted on with confidence, most traders treat it as one supporting factor to combine with structure or a confirming price pattern, rather than a standalone entry trigger.
