Short answer

A yield curve plots the interest rates of bonds with the same credit quality but different maturities, and its shape is closely watched as a signal about growth and inflation expectations. Under typical conditions, longer-dated bonds offer higher yields than shorter-dated ones, since investors generally demand more compensation for tying up money for longer.

Under typical conditions, longer-dated bonds offer higher yields than shorter-dated ones, since investors generally demand more compensation for tying up money for longer. This produces an upward-sloping, or "normal," curve. When short-term yields rise above long-term yields, the curve is said to invert — a pattern that has historically preceded economic slowdowns in some cycles, though the relationship is a historical tendency, not a guaranteed predictor.

Inversions often reflect expectations that a central bank will need to cut rates in the future in response to slowing growth, which pulls longer-term yields down relative to current short-term rates.
Different maturity pairs (such as 2-year versus 10-year yields) are watched separately, and can send different signals at different times.
Lag effects: when an inversion has preceded a slowdown historically, the lag between inversion and any subsequent slowdown has varied considerably, sometimes by well over a year.

Because of this variability and the limited number of historical examples, yield curve signals are best treated as one input for understanding market expectations, not a precise or reliable timing tool for predicting the exact onset of a slowdown.
