Exchange custody — assets held on a trading platform, offering convenience for active trading but relying on that platform's security and solvency.
Hot wallets — software wallets connected to the internet, more convenient but more exposed to online threats.
Cold storage — offline storage methods, generally considered more secure against remote hacking but less convenient for frequent trading.

Holding funds on an exchange for active trading involves accepting that platform's operational and security risk, distinct from the market risk of the trade itself.

A common practice among traders is to keep only the funds needed for active trading on an exchange, moving longer-term holdings to more secure storage. There is no perfectly risk-free custody option — each involves trade-offs between convenience, control, and security that are worth weighing deliberately rather than defaulting to whichever is easiest.
