What Is Crypto Trading?
A 1-minute lesson from the MarketPro academy, one of 20 in crypto trading.
Cryptocurrencies are digital assets recorded on blockchains — distributed ledgers maintained by networks of computers rather than banks. Bitcoin, launched in 2009, was the first; thousands of others followed.
A different kind of asset
Cryptocurrencies are digital assets recorded on blockchains — distributed ledgers maintained by networks of computers rather than banks. Bitcoin, launched in 2009, was the first; thousands of others followed. Trading crypto means speculating on the price of these assets, usually quoted against the US dollar or a dollar-pegged stablecoin (for example BTC/USD).
How crypto trading differs from forex
- Market hours: crypto trades 24/7, weekends included. There is no session close and no true rollover — but also no rest.
- Volatility: daily moves of 5-10% are routine in crypto; a big day in EUR/USD is 1%. Sizing rules must be adjusted accordingly.
- Drivers: alongside macro factors, crypto responds to protocol news, regulation headlines, exchange events and sentiment cycles.
- Market maturity: less regulation, thinner order books outside the majors, and occasional extreme events (exchange failures, flash crashes).
