A pennant is a short-term continuation pattern that looks similar to a small symmetrical triangle, forming after a sharp price move as converging trendlines contain a brief period of consolidation before the prior trend potentially resumes. The key distinction from a full triangle pattern is context and duration: pennants form quickly after a strong "pole" move and are generally shorter-lived, whereas triangles can develop more slowly without necessarily following such a sharp initial thrust.

Pole and pennant: The sharp initial move forms the pole, and the small converging consolidation that follows forms the pennant shape itself.
Volume: Volume typically surges during the pole, contracts during the pennant's consolidation, and often expands again on the breakout.
Bias: Pennants are generally read in the direction of the pole that preceded them, though a breakout in the opposite direction can and does occur.

Because pennants form over a small number of bars, they can be easy to misread in real time, so waiting for a clear breakout with supporting volume, rather than assuming the pattern's outcome mid-formation, helps reduce the risk of premature entries.
