Short answer

A descending triangle is the inverse of the ascending triangle, formed by a series of lower highs pressing down against a roughly flat support level below. The falling upper trendline reflects sellers willing to sell at progressively lower prices, while the flat lower line marks a consistent demand level being defended.

A descending triangle is the inverse of the ascending triangle, formed by a series of lower highs pressing down against a roughly flat support level below.

The falling upper trendline reflects sellers willing to sell at progressively lower prices, while the flat lower line marks a consistent demand level being defended. The pattern is generally considered complete once price breaks decisively below the flat support line.

  • Flat bottom, falling top: The key visual signature distinguishing it from a symmetrical or ascending triangle.
  • Typical context: Descending triangles are traditionally read as continuation patterns within a downtrend, though they can appear at market tops as well.
  • Volume: An increase in volume on the break below support is often viewed as strengthening the case for continued decline.
