Breakout trading looks to enter a position as price moves beyond a defined level of support, resistance, or consolidation, on the idea that the move signals the start of a new directional phase. The logic is that a level being tested repeatedly, then finally broken, may indicate a shift in the balance between buyers and sellers.

Common Setups

Price breaking above resistance after a period of consolidation
A range or triangle pattern resolving in one direction after prolonged tightening
Volume or momentum increasing alongside the break, which can add confidence to the move

The False Breakout Problem

A significant portion of apparent breakouts fail and reverse shortly after, trapping traders who entered right at the break — this is often called a false breakout or "fakeout." Some traders address this by waiting for a candle to close beyond the level, or for price to hold above it for a period, rather than entering the instant the level is touched.

Because false breakouts are common, defining an invalidation point close to the breakout level is essential — if price re-enters the prior range, the original idea is likely wrong. Breakout trading tends to suit markets coming out of low-volatility consolidation, though no method removes the risk of a reversal shortly after entry.
