Volume Analysis Basics
Volume measures how many people were involved, not which side won. On a forex chart it is a proxy, and it is still worth reading.
Volume measures how much changed hands during a period, which is a measure of participation rather than direction. A price move on heavy volume had broad involvement behind it, while the same move on thin volume suggests fewer participants and is easier to reverse. In forex, charts usually display tick volume, a count of price updates rather than lots traded, so it should be read relative to recent candles rather than as an absolute figure.
What to remember
- Forex charts show tick volume, not real volume. It counts price updates, it is broker-specific, and it is only meaningful relative to recent candles.
- Every trade has a buyer and a seller, so volume can never tell you which side was more eager. It measures conviction, not intent.
- A breakout on four times average participation and the same breakout on below-average participation are the same price and very different evidence.
- Grade the entry candle by dividing its volume by the twenty-candle average. That single number turns a vague impression into data you can sort by later.
Lesson 14 of 26 in Technical analysis
Volume measures participation, never direction
Volume counts how much changed hands during a period: shares, contracts or lots. It is the simplest way to ask whether a price move had real participation behind it or whether a handful of orders pushed price through a quiet book. A 40 pip advance on heavy volume and a 40 pip advance on thin volume look identical on a line chart and describe two very different events.
The important limit is that volume is directionless. Every transaction has a buyer and a seller, so volume never tells you which side was more eager. What it tells you is how many people were involved in settling that disagreement, which is a measure of conviction, not of intent.
The forex caveat you have to know first
Forex is decentralised. There is no exchange totalling every trade, so the volume histogram on a retail forex chart is almost always tick volume: a count of how many price updates arrived in the period, not how many lots traded. It is a proxy, and on the major pairs during liquid hours it tracks real activity reasonably well. It degrades badly in thin conditions and it is specific to your broker's feed.
So read forex volume as relative rather than absolute. "More active than the last twenty candles" is a claim tick volume can support. "1.2 billion changed hands" is not. If you trade an index or a futures contract alongside forex, you get genuine exchange volume there, and the difference in reliability is worth remembering when you carry a habit from one market to the other.
The three readings worth taking
- Breakout confirmation. A break above resistance on a clear volume expansion means participants were present at the break. The same break on quiet volume means price drifted through a level nobody was defending, which is easier to reverse.
- Climax volume. An unusually large spike after an extended trend can mark exhaustion, because the last buyers or sellers are finishing their entries. The move has not been contradicted, it has run out of new participants.
- Fading volume in a trend. Steadily declining volume through a rally is an early hint that the move is losing energy, well before price does anything obvious.
