Volume confirmation refers to the practice of checking trading volume alongside a chart pattern's price action to judge whether the move has genuine participation behind it, rather than relying on the pattern's shape alone. Breakout volume: A pattern breakout on unusually light volume is generally considered more prone to failing or reversing than one accompanied by a clear volume increase.
Consolidation volume: Volume often contracts during the consolidation phase of continuation patterns like flags, pennants, and triangles, which is typically viewed as consistent with a healthy pause rather than a change in trend.
Divergent volume: If price pushes to a new extreme within a pattern but volume declines rather than increases, that mismatch can be an early hint of weakening conviction.

Volume confirmation is a supporting tool, not a standalone signal, and volume data itself can be noisy or distorted around news events, so it works best as one additional piece of evidence alongside the price pattern itself.
