Sectors vs Industries
A sector is a broad category, such as technology, healthcare, financials, energy, or consumer goods. Within each sector, more specific industries exist—for example, the technology sector might include separate industries for software, semiconductors, and hardware.
- Companies within the same sector often respond similarly to certain economic conditions, such as interest rate changes or shifts in consumer spending.
- Some sectors are considered more sensitive to economic cycles, rising and falling more with overall economic growth or contraction.
- Other sectors are often viewed as more defensive, since demand for their products or services may hold up more steadily during downturns—though this is a general tendency, not a rule.
