Point Of Interest Confluence
Stacking reasons on a price area only works when the reasons measure different things. Most confluence lists fail that test.
A point of interest is a price area flagged as worth watching, and confluence means stacking multiple independent reasons on that same area before treating it as higher quality. The key word is independent: an order block, a fair value gap and an imbalance describing the same impulse are one observation with three names, not three confirmations.
What to remember
- Test independence by asking whether one factor could exist without the other. A gap cannot exist without the impulse that made the order block.
- Use confluence to choose between setups, not to justify a bigger position. Sizing by conviction puts your largest losses on your most confident ideas.
- Requiring five aligned conditions produces a setup that appears twice a quarter, which is a real cost rather than a sign of discipline.
- A five-reason trade that fails is harder to exit than a two-reason one, which is how a long list quietly makes stops negotiable.
Lesson 18 of 22 in Smart money concepts
Five reasons on one zone, scored honestly
A point of interest is any price area you have flagged as worth watching. Confluence is stacking independent reasons on the same area before treating it as a better one. The word "independent" is doing all the work in that sentence, and it is the word most confluence lists ignore.
Take a GBP/JPY zone at 191.40 to 191.65 and list what supports it. One: a bullish order block formed there. Two: a fair value gap overlaps the top half of it. Three: an imbalance sits across the same range. Four: it is in the discount half of the current 4-hour swing. Five: price swept an obvious low at 191.20 just before returning.
That reads as five factors. Score it honestly and it is closer to three. The order block, the fair value gap and the imbalance are all describing the same impulsive candle sequence, so they are one observation with three names. The discount-zone factor measures something genuinely different (position within the range) and the liquidity sweep measures something different again (what happened to resting orders below). Three independent reasons is a decent setup. Five would have been better, and you did not have five.
What an extra independent factor is worth
The reason this matters is that confluence is usually used to justify a bigger position or a tighter stop, and both of those decisions should be based on real evidence rather than a longer list. If you size up because a zone has five confirmations and three of them were the same confirmation, you have increased risk on the basis of a counting error.
A more defensible approach keeps size constant, worked out once in the position size calculator, and uses confluence for selection instead. When four setups appear in a week and you can only sensibly take two, the one with three genuinely independent reasons beats the one with one, and that is a decision confluence is well suited to. Changing position size by conviction is the decision it is badly suited to, because the trades you feel most certain about are not reliably the ones that work, and sizing up on certainty means your largest losses arrive on your most confident ideas. The risk management guide makes the case for constant sizing in more detail.
