An order block, in SMC terminology, is the last opposing candle (or small cluster) before a strong impulsive move — for example, the final down-candle before an aggressive rally. The narrative holds that large buyers accumulated there, and that unfilled interest remains, making the zone likely to produce a reaction if price returns.

An order block, in SMC terminology, is the last opposing candle (or small cluster) before a strong impulsive move — for example, the final down-candle before an aggressive rally. The narrative holds that large buyers accumulated there, and that unfilled interest remains, making the zone likely to produce a reaction if price returns.

What makes a candidate zone notable

  • The move away is impulsive: large-bodied candles leaving the zone decisively. A weak drift away suggests no meaningful interest.
  • The move breaks structure: the impulse takes out a swing point (a BOS), showing it mattered at the structural level.
  • The zone is fresh: untested since formation. Each revisit consumes whatever interest was there.
