Mitigation Blocks Explained

Short answer

A mitigation block is the last opposing candle before an aggressive move away from a level, revisited later so that trapped positions from that original move can be "mitigated," or closed out, before price continues. When price moves sharply in one direction, some participants end up on the wrong side of that move — for example, sellers who entered just before a rally.

Those positions remain open at a loss until price returns to roughly where they were entered, giving traders a chance to exit at breakeven or a smaller loss. That return visit is what mitigation traders are anticipating.

Mitigation blocks are often confused with order blocks, but the emphasis is on unwinding trapped orders rather than fresh institutional entries
They are usually a shallower, less "clean" zone than a textbook order block, since price only needs to reach the origin of the move, not a specific candle body
They tend to matter most when the original move was sharp and left an imbalance behind it

Because mitigation is inferred rather than directly observable — no trader can see other participants' actual positions — treat it as a probabilistic lens rather than fact. Combine it with structure and liquidity context, and always define invalidation before entering, since price can mitigate a zone and continue through it just as easily as it can reverse.
