Short answer

A balance sheet is a snapshot of what a company owns and owes at a single point in time, structured around a simple equation: assets equal liabilities plus shareholders' equity. Unlike the income statement, which covers a period of activity, the balance sheet reflects a specific date — showing the financial position the company is standing on at that moment.

Assets: resources the company owns, such as cash, inventory, equipment, and property, generally split into current (short-term) and long-term categories.
Liabilities: what the company owes, including short-term payables and long-term debt.
Shareholders' equity: the residual value belonging to owners after liabilities are subtracted from assets.

A few ratios derived from the balance sheet are commonly used to gauge financial health. The current ratio (current assets divided by current liabilities) hints at short-term liquidity, while the debt-to-equity ratio shows how much of the business is financed by borrowing versus owner capital. A heavily indebted company can still be a reasonable business depending on context, but higher leverage generally means more sensitivity to rising interest rates or a downturn in earnings, so it is worth weighing alongside profitability and cash flow rather than in isolation.
