Perpetual Futures And Funding Rates
A 1-minute lesson from the MarketPro academy, one of 20 in crypto trading.
Perpetual futures are a type of crypto derivative that lets traders speculate on price without an expiry date, unlike traditional futures contracts. Because there is no settlement date to anchor the contract price to the underlying asset, exchanges use a mechanism called the funding rate to keep the two aligned.

How Funding Works
Periodically, funding payments are exchanged directly between traders holding long and short positions. If the perpetual contract trades above the underlying spot price, longs typically pay shorts, discouraging excess long demand and pulling the contract price back down. If it trades below spot, the payment flows the other way.
