Short answer

Leverage allows a trader to control a larger position than their deposited capital would otherwise allow, by borrowing the difference from the exchange or broker. In crypto markets, leverage is often offered at high multiples, which can amplify both outcomes dramatically.

What Liquidation Means

When a leveraged position moves against a trader, losses are deducted from the margin posted to open it. If losses reduce that margin below a required maintenance level, the position can be automatically closed by the exchange — this is liquidation. Depending on the platform and market conditions, liquidation can occur quickly, sometimes wiping out the entire margin used for that trade.

Crypto's higher baseline volatility compared to many traditional markets means liquidation risk can materialize faster than traders expect.
Liquidation cascades, where forced selling triggers further liquidations, can accelerate moves during sharp downturns.

Leverage does not change the underlying probability of a trade being right or wrong — it only changes the magnitude of the outcome. Using lower leverage, sizing positions conservatively, and understanding a platform's specific liquidation mechanics are basic steps toward managing this risk rather than eliminating it, since it cannot be fully eliminated.
