Short answer

"Altcoin" broadly refers to any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. As the market has matured, altcoins have split into distinct categories, each with a different purpose and different risk characteristics that traders should understand before treating them as interchangeable.

Common Token Categories

Smart contract platforms — coins that power networks capable of running decentralized applications.
Utility tokens — used to pay fees or access specific services within a network.
Governance tokens — grant holders voting rights over a project's future decisions.
Meme coins — assets whose value is driven largely by community attention and social sentiment rather than underlying utility.

Each category tends to respond to different catalysts. A smart contract platform might move on network upgrade news, while a meme coin might move purely on social media trends with little connection to fundamentals. This distinction matters for risk assessment: assets with weaker underlying utility can be more prone to sharp, sentiment-driven price swings.

Before trading any altcoin, it is worth understanding what category it falls into and what actually drives demand for it. Treating all altcoins as a single homogeneous group can lead to misjudging both the opportunity and the risk involved.
