Platinum and related metals are used heavily in industrial applications, including catalytic converters in vehicles. Their prices are therefore more closely tied to industrial production trends and automotive demand than to the safe-haven flows that often drive gold.

Industrial metals tend to be more sensitive to global economic growth expectations than purely monetary metals.
Supply for some of these metals is concentrated in a small number of producing countries, adding geopolitical and production-disruption risk.
