Choosing A Market And Timeframe Focus
Narrow the plan to a few instruments you can watch in the same hours, and one timeframe you decide on, for long enough to learn something.
Pick two to five instruments and one decision timeframe, then hold that choice for a fixed sample of trades. Familiarity with a market comes from repetition, and a wide watchlist prevents it. Match the timeframe to the hours you can actually sit down for, and check that your average target is large enough to absorb the spread on that timeframe.
What to remember
- The same ATR stop rule gives 13.5 pips on EUR/USD and 27 on GBP/JPY, halving the position and raising the cost share.
- At a 10 pip target a 1 pip spread costs 10% of the gross move. At 60 pips it costs 1.7%.
- Switching markets after three consecutive losses means switching roughly every eleven trades at a 55% loss rate.
- EUR/USD, GBP/USD and AUD/USD are three charts and largely one dollar position, not a diversified list.
- Commit the instrument list for a fixed sample such as 100 trades, then change one thing at the review.
Step 3 of 10 on Build Your Trading Plan
Two or three instruments, one timeframe, for long enough to learn something
Narrow the plan to a handful of instruments you can watch during the same hours every session, and to one timeframe you make decisions on. The reason is not tidiness. It is that familiarity with how a specific market behaves is built by repetition, and repetition is exactly what a wide watchlist destroys.
The practical floor is around two instruments and the practical ceiling is around five. Below two and you spend most sessions with nothing to do, which is its own risk. Above five and you are sampling many markets shallowly rather than learning any of them.
The same rule produces three different trades on three instruments
Take one rule, "stop at 1.5 times the 14-period ATR on the 1-hour chart", and apply it across three common instruments. Typical 1-hour ATR values run near 9 pips on EUR/USD, near 18 pips on GBP/JPY, and near $3.50 on gold.
| Instrument | 1h ATR | Stop (1.5x) | Typical spread | Spread as share of risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | 9 pips | 13.5 pips | 1.0 pip | 7.4% |
| GBP/JPY | 18 pips | 27 pips | 2.5 pips | 9.3% |
| Gold (XAU/USD) | $3.50 | $5.25 | $0.30 | 5.7% |
On a $3,000 account risking 1%, the $30 of risk buys about $2.20 a pip on EUR/USD and only $1.10 a pip on GBP/JPY, half the position for the same money at stake, and the GBP/JPY trade hands back a larger share of its gross result in spread. A pip is not the same money on every instrument either: on a yen cross it is 1,000 yen per standard lot, worth roughly $6.70 rather than the $10 a dollar-quoted major pays, so the lot size behind that $1.10 is not the one the EUR/USD row would suggest. Same rule, different trade, different cost structure, different pace. The pip calculator converts these into account currency for your own broker, and the sizing follows from the stop through the position size calculator.
Match the timeframe to the hours you can genuinely sit down for
A 5-minute chart across the three-hour London open produces 36 bars and, on most rule sets, several decision points. A 4-hour chart produces one bar in that window and often none worth acting on. Neither is superior. What matters is whether the decision rate fits the attention you can actually give it.
Cost scales with the same choice. If your average target is 10 pips and the spread is 1 pip, you are giving back 10% of the gross move before slippage. At a 60 pip target the same spread costs 1.7%. Short timeframes are not wrong, but they need either a tighter spread or a larger edge per trade to carry the same drag, and that constraint should be written into the plan rather than discovered after 200 trades.
