Adapting Your Plan To Changing Market Conditions

Short answer

Markets shift between different regimes — trending versus ranging, calm versus volatile — and a strategy well-suited to one regime can underperform in another. A mature trading plan includes some framework for recognizing these shifts and adjusting appropriately, rather than assuming one approach fits all conditions forever.

This doesn't mean abandoning a plan at the first sign of a losing trade; it means building in objective criteria for recognizing a genuine change in market character, distinct from normal short-term variance. Volatility measures, the presence or absence of clear trending behavior, and changes in typical trading ranges are common signals worth monitoring.

Define, in the plan itself, what a "trending" versus "ranging" market looks like for the instruments you trade
Decide in advance whether certain setups should be paused or resized during unusually high or low volatility
Review, on a regular schedule, whether recent market conditions still match the conditions your strategy was designed and tested for

The goal is a plan flexible enough to adjust position sizing or setup selection in response to real regime changes, while still resistant to being second-guessed after every individual loss. Adapting a plan is different from abandoning it — changes should be deliberate, documented, and based on a large enough sample of evidence, not a reaction to a single bad week.
