Short answer

Price action trading focuses on reading the raw movement of price on a chart — candle shapes, swing highs and lows, and support/resistance zones — without relying on lagging indicators derived from that same price data. Because indicators are calculated from past price, they inherently lag; price action aims to work directly with the most current information available on the chart.

Why Some Traders Prefer This Approach

Because indicators are calculated from past price, they inherently lag; price action aims to work directly with the most current information available on the chart. Removing indicators can also simplify a trading screen and reduce the number of potentially conflicting signals to weigh at once.

Price action is not free of subjectivity — identifying levels and interpreting candle behavior still involves judgment, and two price-action traders can read the same chart differently. It also does not eliminate the need for risk management; stop-losses and position sizing remain just as important as in any indicator-based approach. Many traders treat price action as a foundation, sometimes adding select indicators for additional context rather than as a replacement for this reading of the chart.
