Position Sizing Strategies
A 1-minute lesson from the MarketPro academy, one of 24 in trading strategies.
Position sizing determines how much capital or how many units of an instrument to trade, and is one of the few elements of a strategy a trader has complete control over — unlike where price will move next. Because no individual trade's outcome can be known in advance, varying position size based on confidence in a particular setup effectively means taking on more risk exactly when overconfidence may be highest.

A Basic Approach: Fixed Percentage Risk
- Deciding on a maximum percentage of account capital to risk per trade, commonly a small figure such as 1-2%
- Calculating position size based on the distance to the stop-loss, so that if the stop is hit, the loss equals the predetermined percentage
- Keeping this percentage consistent across trades, rather than sizing up on trades that "feel" more confident
