A demo account, sometimes called paper trading, allows a trader to place simulated trades using virtual funds, based on real or close-to-real market prices, without risking actual money. Demo trading has real limitations.

Demo trading has real limitations. Because no actual money is at risk, it cannot fully replicate the emotional experience of trading with real funds, and traders sometimes behave differently—often more aggressively—in a demo account than they would with real capital on the line.

Execution conditions in a demo environment can also differ from live trading, including differences in fill prices, spreads, and slippage during fast-moving markets, since there may not be real counterparties on the other side of a simulated trade.

Demo trading is best treated as a learning tool for building familiarity with mechanics and testing ideas, rather than as definitive proof of how a strategy will perform once real money and real emotions are involved.
