Spreads, Commissions and Swap
Spread, commission and swap are small on one trade and decisive across several hundred of them.
The spread is the gap between the bid and the ask, and it is why a new position opens slightly in loss. Commission is a fixed charge per lot per side on raw-spread accounts. Swap is the overnight financing charged or credited on positions held past the daily rollover, and it is usually tripled once a week to cover the weekend.
What to remember
- Compare all-in cost, not headline spread. A 0.2-pip spread with 3.50 USD commission per side is about 9 USD a round turn on a standard lot.
- Swap is tripled once a week for the weekend value date, which quietly triples the financing on a swing position that night.
- Costs scale with frequency. Five trades a day at 2.40 USD each is roughly 4.8% of a 5,000 USD account per month before you are level.
- A 1.2-pip cost against a 5-pip target gives away a quarter of the gross result. Against a 60-pip target it gives away 2%.
Step 5 of 12 on Forex Foundations
Trading has three recurring costs: the spread on every entry, a commission on some account types, and swap on anything held overnight. None of them is large on a single trade in a major pair. All of them are decisive across a few hundred trades, which is why a strategy that looks profitable on a chart can be unprofitable in an account.
The spread
Every quote has two prices. The bid is where you can sell, the ask is where you can buy, and the ask is always the higher of the two. The gap between them is the spread. If EUR/USD is quoted 1.08500 / 1.08512, the spread is 1.2 pips, and a new long position opens at 1.08512 while its current value is marked at the bid of 1.08500. The trade starts in loss by exactly the spread. That is normal mechanics, not a fee taken from your balance.
Spreads are not constant. They are tightest in the liquid majors during the London and New York hours, and they widen at the daily rollover, around scheduled releases, at the Sunday open and in anything exotic. A pair quoted at 0.8 pips during the London session can be quoted at 4 pips ninety seconds before a rate decision. If your strategy trades those moments, price the cost at the moment you trade, not the moment you backtested.
Commission, and comparing account types honestly
Two pricing models dominate. A standard account shows a wider spread and charges nothing else. A raw or ECN account shows a very tight spread and charges a fixed commission per lot per side. Neither is inherently cheaper, and comparing the headline spread alone is how people talk themselves into the more expensive option.
| Account | Typical EUR/USD spread | Commission | All-in cost per standard lot round turn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 1.4 pips | None | About 14 USD |
| Raw / ECN | 0.2 pips | 3.50 USD per lot per side | About 9 USD |
Convert both to one number, cost per round turn on the size you actually trade, and compare that. Do it for the specific pairs you trade too, because the raw account's advantage is largest on the tightest majors and can disappear entirely on a cross. The profit calculator makes the comparison concrete on a real position, and if your broker pays rebates, the rebate calculator shows what comes back.
