Trading Crypto's 24/7 Market Structure

A market with no closing bell will take every hour you give it, and it moves hardest when the fewest people are awake.

In short

Crypto markets trade continuously, with no daily close, no weekend break and no exchange holidays. That removes opening gaps but adds exposure you cannot supervise: liquidity still thins during overnight and weekend hours, so the same flow moves price further. Protective orders have to rest on the exchange rather than in your head.

What to remember

  • A resting stop and a mental stop are different instruments at 03:00 on a Sunday. One executes the plan, the other hands you a decision while half awake.
  • Continuous does not mean uniform. Volume follows human working hours, and the thinnest window of the week is reliably the overnight hours after the US close on Friday.
  • There is no official daily close, so every candle depends on a convention. Pick one, use it everywhere, and expect others to be using different ones.
  • Decide a weekend policy once and apply it every week, rather than judging each Friday by how the week went.

No close, no opening bell, and no permission to look away

Most crypto markets trade continuously. No weekend close, no daily settlement, no exchange holiday. Stock markets pause for roughly two thirds of every week and forex closes from Friday evening to Sunday. Crypto does neither, and that single structural fact changes how positions behave, how prices form, and what a trading routine has to look like.

The immediate consequence is the obvious one and the least interesting: you cannot watch it. The more useful consequences are that news never waits for an open, that there is no official reference price to anchor anything to, and that liquidity still follows a human schedule even though the market does not.

The Sunday 03:00 move you were asleep for

Take a concrete case. You hold 3,000 USD of bitcoin at 60,000, bought Friday afternoon, with a stop 5% below at 57,000. On Saturday evening a regulatory headline lands. Between 02:00 and 04:00 on Sunday, in the thinnest two hours of the week, price runs from 59,200 to 55,800.

If your stop was resting on the exchange, you are out near 57,000, having lost about 150 USD, which is the plan working. If your stop was a mental one, or an alert on your phone with the sound off, you wake up to a position 7% underwater and a decision to make while emotional and uninformed. The loss is roughly 210 USD, and more importantly the exit is now a judgement call rather than a rule.

Nothing in that scenario is exotic. Weekend headlines are common, the 02:00 to 06:00 UTC window on a Sunday is reliably the thinnest of the week, and a 5% overnight move in bitcoin is a normal event rather than a crisis. The only variable you controlled was whether the protective order existed on the venue or in your head.

Liquidity still has a timetable

Continuous trading does not mean uniform trading. Volume follows the working hours of the people and firms who provide it, and it concentrates around the Asian, European and US sessions in much the way forex volume does. The overlap when Europe and the US are both active is the deepest part of the day. The hours after the US closes on a Friday are the thinnest part of the week.

FAQ

Trading Crypto's 24/7 Market Structure: questions

Does the crypto market ever close?
Spot crypto trades continuously, every day of the year, with no scheduled close on major exchanges. Individual venues go offline for maintenance or during extreme volatility, and some regulated crypto derivatives do follow exchange hours, but the underlying market itself does not pause. There is no opening gap because there is no reopen.
When is crypto liquidity lowest?
During the overnight hours between the US close and the Asian open, and across the weekend, with the thinnest stretch usually falling in the early hours of Sunday. Spreads widen, order books thin out and the same size of trade moves price further. Large wicks cluster in those windows for exactly that reason.
Should I close crypto positions before the weekend?
That is a policy decision worth making once rather than weekly. Holding through the weekend means two extra days of exposure in thinner books with no chance to react in real time, so the options are flattening, halving size, or holding full size with a wider stop and smaller position. Any of those is defensible. Deciding it each Friday based on recent results is not.
