Crypto Trading Pairs And Quote Currencies
A 1-minute lesson from the MarketPro academy, one of 20 in crypto trading.
In crypto trading, assets are almost always quoted against another currency in a pair, such as a coin priced in US dollars or in Bitcoin. Understanding how pairs are structured helps make sense of what a price actually represents.

Reading A Pair
A pair is written as base/quote. The first asset listed is the base, the one being bought or sold; the second is the quote, the currency used to express its price. If an altcoin is priced against Bitcoin rather than a fiat currency, its dollar value can move even if its price against Bitcoin stays flat, simply because Bitcoin's own dollar price moved.
