Exit Rules: Stop Loss And Take-Profit Frameworks

Short answer

Where and how a trade is exited often has a bigger impact on overall results than the entry itself. A trading plan should define exit rules with the same precision as entry rules, covering both the loss-limiting stop and the profit-taking target.

Stop-loss placement should be based on where the original trade idea is invalidated — for example, beyond a structural level that would prove the setup wrong — rather than an arbitrary distance or a size chosen just to fit a comfortable dollar risk. Take-profit planning can follow a fixed risk-reward ratio, a technical target such as a prior level, or a trailing approach that lets winners run while protecting some gains.

Fixed target: exit at a predetermined risk-reward multiple of the initial risk
Structural target: exit near a technical level where the move is statistically likely to slow or reverse
Trailing exit: move the stop progressively as price moves favorably, giving up some certainty for potential additional gains

Whichever framework is chosen, it should be written down clearly enough to follow mechanically, since exit decisions made in the moment are especially prone to emotional interference — cutting winners short out of fear, or holding losers too long hoping for a reversal. Every stop-loss represents an accepted, defined loss; using stops consistently limits the damage of individual trades but does not eliminate risk from trading overall.
